This is the map which shows the degree of preference by regions (red are still republicans, blue democrats, but the shades of purple give percentages in between):
We still believe Obama was a better candidate, but this is enough to say that the concurrent economic crisis and a better electoral campaign, were also influential in determining Obama's victory.

So Texas is not all red. There is some blue in the SW, close to the border. I guess people from Zapata, TX, massively voted against the Republicans...
A glance at the county by county returns for Texas is really interesting. It seems that the counties in and around major cities (e.g. San Antonio) voted overwhelmingly for Obama. The further you go out into Hickland, the redder the state becomes, and the higher the percentage vote for Mccain in an individual county (e.g. he won some outlying counties by over 90% - but the absolute number of votes in these places was relatively small).
Seems like here at least, Obama's vote was concentrated among inner city suburban types......
