Were 16th century Europeans confusing Turkey and India when refering to the Americas? In Québec, we call corn blé d'Inde (Indian wheat), in Italy it's granoturco (Turkish wheat). We call turkeys dinde (chicken from India) while in english it's turkey (chicken from Turkey).
